Summer Favourites

The summer sun is out (periodically here in Britain) so I thought I'd share a few of the things I've been enjoying this summer.

A small part of my Discworld collection
I'll start with books. I don't often get time to read so when it comes to the summer holidays I read as much as I possibly can. I am a huge fan of Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels and have been for many years. After he sadly passed away this year the first thing I wanted to do was dive into one of his creative and comical fictional adventures... so I did!
I am currently just finishing 'Guards!Guards!' (the eighth novel in the series) and I'm loving it. In fact, I have adored all the Discworld books I have read so far and recommend them to almost everyone I meet.
If you enjoy fantasy novels with grown up wit then you will love this series as much as I do.
I have the next three books already and hope to read as much of them as I can before September when I return to University.

Barry M Gelly Nail Paint in Satsuma

Now let's talk nails. I find that my nails look much healthier in summer as the combination of sunlight, fresh air and healthier food helps them grow stronger and longer.
I've always been a bit of a nail art addict ever since I got out of school and no longer had to have strictly nude nails.

I've been having fun experimenting with a variety of different shades these past few months, including seaside pastels and sunny brights. Boots have had a few offers on with Barry M products so I treated myself to some of their Gelly Hi-Shine Nail Paint. These polishes are fairly quick drying and last longer without chipping. Therefore they are great for withstanding sea, sand and summer heat.

Summer isn't quite right without a tan is it? So if you are as fair skinned as me or just are too busy to sunbathe then you might want to add this next product to your shopping list.
It's Garnier's Summer Body Moisturising Lotion. I have been using this since I've got back from my holiday because what little tan I had seemed to fade as soon as I arrived back in England.
Garnier Summer Body - my secret fake tan!
It's a moisturiser that gradually builds a natural looking tan. I apply it every other week (because I'm a bit lazy with moisturising routines) but you could do it more often if you wanted to!
It smells amazing when you put it on, I would describe it as a combination of sun-cream and apricot - like summer in a bottle. The only downside is once the moisturiser has sunk into your skin it leaves a less nice sent (not a bad one - just odd) but I don't mind this as it comes off in the shower and the tan stays on my skin for about a week.
I've not had many problems with streaks, as long as you take your time you should come out with an even and natural looking tan.

She can even take on the big guy!
This blog post is getting a bit too girly so let's get nerdy. Next up on my list of summer favourites is the New 52 Supergirl Volume 1. I know this came out ages ago but I've only just got round to starting it.

I have to say I love this version of Supergirl. She looks great and seems to have great character. The artwork in this comic is brilliant and I am really enjoying the story arc. I haven't finished reading it yet but loved it so much from the beginning that I thought I had to include it in my summer favourites.

If you love a bit of superhero action and girl power then this will be a great comic for you!

Lego bricks or amazing shoes?
Lastly, a summer obsession of mine has been chunky shoes. In particular, I love this pair of HATTY Cleated Sandals that I got from Topshop for £30.
I fell in love with these shoes at first sight and bought them straight away (something I never do). I am so glad I did.
These shoes are seriously comfy and are easy to walk in as the heel isn't too high.

They may slightly resemble Lego bricks, but chunky platforms were all the rage in the nineties and seem to be making a comeback. Despite their quirkiness I have had a lot of complements about these shoes and they now take pride of place in my summer wardrobe.

So that was five of my favourite things this summer, I'm hoping the sunshine will stick around a bit longer for me to keep enjoying them!

Antman Premiere

Antman is the latest edition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I was very excited for its release, so in preparation my boyfriend Luke and I decided to spot the stars at the European premiere of the film. I had never been to a premiere before but it was something I'd always wanted to do.

Standing up against some railings in central London for hours on end may seem like a chore to some, but for me the prospect of possibly meeting some Hollywood actors (and maybe even a superhero) made the wait entirely worthwhile.

Just after mid-day we arrived in London's Leicester Square (the location of the Antman premiere) greeted by multiple sky high posters of Paul Rudd confirming we were in the right place. There were a few fans and autograph hunters dotted around the Odeon cinema but it wasn't too busy at this stage so we were able to secure a spot right against the railings where we hoped some celebrities would walk past.

Director Peyton Reed meeting fans
The long wait for the premiere to begin didn't seem too bad at all, as we were kept entertained by witnessing the stage being set up and the ant themed red carped rolled out.

By the time the show had begun we were bursting with excitement as the place had filled up with hundreds of fans hoping to catch a glimpse of the lead actors... they were not disappointed.

The first to arrive was the director Peyton Reed. I didn't know much of the Hollywood directors work before this, but Luke being a true film geek filled me in on all the details as Peyton walked past.

Next to make a big entrance was Michael Douglas who plays Hank Pym in the film. The crowd buzzed with awe and excitement as he walked up the red carpet accompanied by his family.

Soon after, we spotted Michael Pena arriving. Luke snapped a few photos of the actor as he drifted past however, much like the other celebrities he hadn't come over to our side of the crowd. We were beginning to think we were standing in the wrong place.

But then our negative thoughts ebbed away as Antman himself, Paul Rudd appeared in Leicester Square and after posing for the press photographers, walked straight over to us. We enthusiastically asked him for a selfie (as you do nowadays) and he kindly obliged.

Sadly however, I panicked and only managed to get about a quarter of my face in shot. I was so annoyed at myself at the time but to be honest I don't care now because I still got to meet the lead actor of the film which I think makes my first attempt at premiere-going a success!

Paul Rudd, Luke and a bit of my face
After the stars of the film had come through, a few British celebrities such as Isaac Hempstead, Leigh Francis and Blake Harrison along with YouTubers Tomska and Jack Howard arrived to walk the red carpet and watch the new Marvel movie.

It's now just over a week later and I have watched Antman myself. I can honestly say I thought it was a brilliant film. I imagined Marvel making Antman the joke superhero, but despite the odd comical moment that you expect in the MCU, they actually made Antman seem pretty cool.

P.S the after credit scene was awesome too!

SciFi London - SciFido

On Sunday I was privileged enough to attend the unusual event that is SciFido, a dog show revolving around science fiction themed fancy dress (in other words cosplaying canines).

Yes, this genuinely is a real thing! I couldn't believe it either.

I arrived at the Ritzy Picturehouse Cinema in Brixton, London on Sunday afternoon to find the exterior of the venue coated in balloons. Amidst the many SciFi London balloons was a small stage where the dogs would later be posing for the audience and professional dog photographer Ian Morrison.

I met up with my press friends and we begun work interviewing the event organisers. While we were doing so, one by one dog owners and their furry friends began to arrive. None of them were in costume yet though as they were keeping the suspense.

Just as I began to settle in, thinking the event wouldn't be as scarily strange as I'd thought... I spotted Princess Leia walking towards me with Darth Vader and Yoda on leads.
Princess Leia (Emma) with her Star Wars dogs

As I approached dog owner Emma who had come dressed as the popular Star Wars Princess I couldn't quite believe her tiny puppy Minnie was bright green!

Dog Vader?
Emma described how she had dyed Minnie's fur with a special dog hair dye but had to apply two coats to get the perfect Yoda green. She also explained that her other dog Doodles (dressed as Darth Vader) was wearing a Build-A-Bear outfit that she had modified.

I couldn't believe my eyes. More and more madly dressed dogs were arriving at the venue dressed as a variety of characters from science fictions such as: Star Trek, Alien, Star Wars and more. Even a cat attended the event cosplaying as a ghost-buster.

Presenter and entertainer Bunny Galore was the hostess of the event and interviewed each pet owner while the furry beasts strutted their stuff on stage.

Host Bunny Galore on stage
It was truly bizarre but also wonderfully fun as passersby stopped to marvel at the quirky dog show.

When the time came to reveal the results there was an air of excitement as members of the crowd tried to predict the winners. Ms Galore made the announcement and there were three winning entrants.

The winning entrants were Doodles and Minnie as Darth Vader and Yoda from Star Wars, Bo as Ripley from Alien and Missy as the USS Enterprise 1701 from Star Trek.

And the winners are...

Overall, it was a crazy day full of lots of entertainment. As mad as cosplay dogs may seem, I can't deny it was good fun!

Black Widow Style Hair

One of the things I love about the 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' film is that Black Widow gets so much more action than in the first film. Scarlett Johansson looks great as Black Widow as she shows off a bit of girl power, so obviously I couldn't wait to re-create her curly haired look.

Black Widow Style Hair
The Black Widow look revolves around fairly messy curls so I decided to use a straightener to create the varied curl style as opposed to a curling tong which may create a neater look.

Whenever I am using heat for a style I wash my hair first and let it dry naturally in order to prevent too much damage. You can also use a heat protection spray.

As my hair is quite thick I then tie up the top layers of hair and begin work on the bottom ones.

I grip my hair with the straighteners near the roots and then twist it away from my face and drag down to the ends.

In order to achieve Black Widows messier look I vary the amount of hair I use in each curl. For tighter looking ringlets use a small amount of hair and for looser waves use more hair.

I continue this through all the layers of my hair in order to achieve the finished look and then lightly use hairspray all over. I tend to use TIGI Bed Head – Headrush.

Then just add a black leather jacket and you're ready to save the world!

The finished look!

Scarlet Lips

In celebration of the Avengers Age of Ultron movie (which is amazing by the way!) featuring a new character in the form of Scarlet Witch, I thought I would share my personal reviews of some of my favourite red lipsticks.

For those who aren't quite ready for super bold lips but want to brighten up their face with a subtle red lipstick, I would recommend Autograph’s Moisture Colour Lipstick in Coral. This is one of my favourite lipsticks which I often wear on a daily basis as it is so easy to apply and gives a smooth shiny finish. The colour isn't too bright so it is a red you can wear on any occasion that brightens up your face but doesn't draw too much attention to your lips.
You can find this lipstick in Marks and Spencer for £8.50

Next up is a truly bright red! Collection’s Volume Sensation Lipstick in Cherry Pop (No 8) is for those who want the wow factor on a night out or a bright pop of colour for the summer. This lipstick is so pigmented and lasts hours before having to re-apply. It has a nice matte finish, but avoid touching your lips too much throughout the day as I find the colour tends to transfer easily onto clothes and skin.
I found this in Boots for only £2.99!

Last but not least is a deep dark red for people daring enough to try it. I was nervous at first to try Rimmel London’s Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate Moss in 107 as I have very pale skin and I thought the dark tones would drain the colour from my face. However, when I tried it on I was amazed that such a dark lipstick could look good on me. The plum shades that come through this deep red lipstick are really stunning and eye-catching. I really recommend giving this one a go for bold statement lips. I have found it is a great colour for nights out, is easy to apply and gives long lasting wear.
I picked this lipstick up in Boots for £5.49
