Sci-fi Fashion

As you may know from my previous fashion posts, I love to express my nerdy personality through my clothes. Of course I have a fabulous collection of geeky t-shirts, but sometimes I like to get a bit more creative. As it is Christmas - the time of year when we all get to bring out the glitter - I have been inspired to get glittery myself with some sci-fi themed metallics. So, lets take a look at my out of this world (worst pun ever) outfit!

First up, lets start with sequins. To be honest, sequins don’t normally feature in my wardrobe, but when I saw this cute planet t-shirt I absolutely fell in love. This top is simple but fun and definitely shows off a bit of sci-fi pride. It just goes to show that sequins can be incorporated into an every day outfit, without looking over the top. This space themed t-shirt now has pride of place in my wardrobe.

Next up, THAT skirt! I absolutely adore it. Seriously, there are so many things to love about this skirt. The holographic fabric is gorgeously eye-catching and combined with the high-waisted fit, it instantly makes me think of the 90s. Whenever I wear this skirt I get so many compliments from people. The first time I wore it was on a night out and I had complete strangers coming up to me asking where I bought it. One girl even compared me to a mermaid! So, clearly this skirt is popular with everyone and it is a great addition to my spacey sci-fi outfit. Plus, to be totally honest, it reminds me of the hat Marty McFly wears in Back to the Future II - what’s not to love!?

To add an extra bit of shimmer, I bought these black glitter fishnet tights. Fishnets seem to be making a comeback, so when I spotted these glittery ones I knew I had to have them. They are perfect for injecting a subtle bit of sparkle into an outfit and would look great with a little black dress on a night out.

Finally, I added a pastel pink hooded jacket which matches perfectly with the pink hues in the holographic skirt. The jacket is made of a super soft light material and I adore it.

So there we have it, my sci-fi fashion as inspired by the glittery Christmas season.

Let me know what you think of this look in the comments below. As always, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Halloween Comic-book Costumes

Halloween is just around the corner and that means it's time to think about costumes. I love having fun with fancy dress and this spooky celebration is a great opportunity to cosplay.
Batman villains always pop up at Halloween parties

Last year Harley Quinn was the go to costume for girls and The Joker was for the boys. At every party you could spot multiple ladies sporting the “Daddy’s Little Monster” t-shirt and the pink and blue dip-dyed hair seen in Suicide Squad. Harley Quinn’s were everywhere and this year I'm predicting we will be seeing lots of Wonder Women in their place.

Lots of people made jokes about how all the girls were wearing the same costumes at Halloween parties last year. To be honest though, I don't think it's a bad thing. The fact that so many girls want to dress as these fictional female icons means that comic-book characters are becoming more popular and I love that!

I understand that some people may be irritated by seeing someone dress up as a character after just seeing them in one film, but surely it shows they have an interest in the character and want to know more. No one was born knowing everything about comic-books and superheroes, we all have to be new to it at some point, so give the newbies a chance.

More people are enjoying the superhero genre and I think that’s great. The more popular comic-book based films become, the more likely it is that we will get treated to lots of merchandise, tv shows and films - what’s not to love? Already there are tons of DC and Marvel films planned for years to come and that’s all down to the swift rise in popularity.

Plus, if I’m right in my prediction that Wonder Woman will be the go to costume for this years fancy dress parties, the world will be flooded with girl power passion and that’s definitely a brilliant thing.

So, when you spot lots of superhero costumes this Halloween, you should rejoice in the fact that superheroes are now officially mainstream cool. Who would have thought that day would come? Oh and enjoy the opportunity to cosplay without non-geeks thinking you're bonkers!

Let me know in the comments what you are doing for Halloween. I just love this time of year!
Happy Halloween

Spidey is back! Spider-Man Homecoming review

Spider-Man has swung back onto the big screen in the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Spider-Man Homecoming. If like me you are a lover of superhero movies, you will absolutely adore this film. Trust me on this one!

Are your Spidey senses tingling?
Now, numerous actors have played the role of Spider-Man in the past, but this time Tom Holland a young British actor has taken on the iconic role. I know what your thinking, what makes Tom Holland any different from the others? Well, for me he perfectly captured both the nerdy personality of Peter Parker and the comical and cheeky side of Spider-Man. Throughout the film, we get to see the awkward cringe moments of Peter Parker's life as a teenager and the overly excitable and cocky persona of the currently inexperienced Spider-Man. For me, Tom Holland really does seem to be the perfect fit for the role. Don't get me wrong, I am still a fan of the Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire Spider-Man incarnations, but this version seems to tick all the boxes!

We saw a glimpse of Tom Holland as the popular web slinging superhero in Captain America Civil War, where we saw him teaming up with Iron Man. If you've seen the trailers you'll know that Robert Downey Junior's Iron Man does indeed make an appearance in this blockbuster as well. Some Marvel fans were worried about the possibility of Iron Man taking over the whole movie, but luckily this is not the case. The famous Tony Stark only appears in a few scenes and is more of a cameo style character. Speaking of cameos, Iron Man isn't the only Avenger to pop-up in the film, keep your eyes peeled for a certain guy in stars and stripes.

The film is packed full of action sequences, comical dialogue and of course a gripping plot. Spider-Man Homecoming sees a young Peter Parker hone his spidey senses with a few bumps along the way, whilst also trying to get through high school like any normal teenager - which is quite a lot for one person to handle. The villain of the film is The Vulture, played by Michael Keaton. The backstory and motives of this character tie nicely into previous Marvel films, giving more context of what life is like in a world filled with superheroes.

Spider-Man Homecoming really is a great addition to the MCU and does a fantastic job of establishing Tom Holland as the new Spiderman. So what are you waiting for? Head on down to your local cinema, grab some popcorn and give it a watch. Oh and don't forget to stick around for the after credit scene. It's quite possibly the funniest and cheekiest one Marvel have made yet!

If you've seen the film, let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I'd love to know your views.

How to get your 'Nerd News'

Geek culture is becoming ever more popular and as a result we are frequently being treated to more geeky goodies. From superhero films to comic-conventions we really are being spoilt! With so much going on, it can be hard to stay up to date with the latest nerdy news, so in this post I'm going to tell you how you can keep up with it all.

Firstly there are of course lots of geek themed magazines out there, particularly ones that cover TV, film and game releases. To be honest, I don't often buy these magazines as I rarely get time to sit down and read one, but if there is a particular edition that is covering a film I'm excited about or has a big interview in it then I do treat myself. My boyfriend loves magazines like Empire as they have great film reviews. Although Empire is not strictly a geeky magazine, with so many superhero and sci-fi movies now gracing our screens, the mag regularly includes geeky gossip we want to hear. However, if you are looking for a magazine that solely focuses on geek culture, I recommend checking out SFX or Starburst magazine.

Similarly, you can check out nerdy news sites such as GamesRadar or Nerdist. Sites like these have great articles on game release news. They also have detailed reviews of upcoming nerdy films and TV shows. The brilliant thing about these websites is that they present their news and reviews in a variety of different ways, including articles, videos and podcasts.

Personally I love searching social media for geeky gossip! I am constantly on Instagram as @glamandgeek scrolling through my nerdy feed to find out updates on geek themed films and TV shows. Social media is probably the quickest way to find nerdy news, but you do have to be aware of the gossip that sometimes gets tangled up with real updates. The other risk with social media is the dreaded spoilers!!! I can remember having a major Game of Thrones death spoiled for me by someone posting about it on Facebook. I was very tempted to unfriend the individual after the incident, but luckily for them I was forgiving.

Finally, a great way to find out the latest news is by socialising with other geeky peeps. If there's any news I've missed, my nerdy friends are sure to fill me in with all the details.

So, that's how you can find out the latest nerdy news. How do you get your geek updates? Let me know in the comments below!

Embracing my inner girly geek!

This month I turned 22, which means I'm definitely a grown up now, there's no turning back! When you reach your 20s I think it is important to embrace who you are and not be afraid of what people think of you. I am a girly geek and every day I embrace these elements of my personality, whether that be by trying out new beauty techniques or showing off my PlayStation themed phone case. In this blog post I'm going to talk about how I embrace my true personality and why you should too.

A Pokemon training Princess #Goals
When I was little I thought there were two options: you were a tomboy or a girly girl. This was very confusing for me, as I appeared to be a bit of both. As a 6 year old my ambition was to be both a Princess and a Pokemon trainer. Of course these are no longer my goals as an adult, but they are still very much a part of my personality. I love my girly and fashion conscious feminine side and I adore the part of me that is passionate about geek culture.

Without a doubt, the hardest time to accept yourself for who you are is when you are a teenager. In my early teenage years I hung out with a group of VERY girly girls. I like to refer to them as: 'the compulsory lipgloss club'.

Although I enjoyed being girly, I found it difficult to fit in with this group of girls, as they became extremely judgmental of anyone different to themselves. For example, I was criticised for being a fan of Doctor Who, as in their eyes it was definitely not classed as a 'cool' TV show. When hanging out with these girls you would be condemned if you had a single hair out of place, were wearing the wrong kind of clothes or didn't like the popular boy bands that they did.

Eventually, I saw sense and realised I would be much happier if I made friends with people who accepted me for who I really was. So, I did and instantly wished I had done it sooner!

Now, as an adult, I show off all aspects of my personality as often as I can. I do this because I am proud to be both geeky and girly. You should never have to pretend to be something you're not. Even if someone doesn't enjoy the same things as you, they may be interested to find out about your hobbies. When I tell people I've been to comic-cons they are often surprised, but intrigued to know more. If people don't like you for who you are, then that's their problem. You should never have to change yourself to please others.

Everyone is meant to be unique. If we all had the same personality, the world would be a very boring place. So, I urge you all to embrace your true personality and worry less about what others may think. Trust me, it makes you feel a lot happier and makes you a much more interesting person to be around!

My thoughts on '13 Reasons Why'

This post is a little different to most of the posts on this blog. It is the first time I'm writing about something that doesn't relate to my usual geeky theme. This is because I wanted to share my thoughts about the recent Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

If you have not yet heard about this series, it is a tv show based on a book about the suicide of a teenage girl called Hannah. The series looks at the events leading up to Hannah's death, focusing on the individuals and situations that caused her to take her own life. The story is told by Hannah herself, through a recording she made on thirteen sides of cassette tapes before her death. It is a dark and heartbreaking story, but it highlights some of the real life issues young people face on a daily basis.

Although 13 Reasons Why was difficult to watch at points and made me both sad and angry at the world, I continued watching until the end, because it was telling such an important story. It is amazing that a show like this has been given such a large platform. This gripping and emotive series has raised awareness for mental health issues and given young people an opportunity to discuss the pressures and struggles they face - making them feel less alone. Personally, I think this is amazing.

However, I should warn you that it is not a good show to binge watch on your own. The series tackles some difficult issues and shows some extremely graphic and distressing scenes. If you have suffered from mental health or abuse yourself, you may find the show particularly difficult to watch. I only watched one episode on my own, but instantly regretted doing so because of the upsetting content shown.

Even though there were some very distressing scenes in the show that I found difficult to watch, I am glad that a show like this has been given a platform and has therefore given mental health sufferers a voice. The show takes viewers on a heartbreaking journey, but it is no doubt an important story to be told.

If you have not yet seen the series, I highly recommend watching it. Not just because it was well written, had great performances and was well produced, but because it makes you think about some of the pain people can suffer and what we can do to help each other get through it.

If you have watched the series, please let me know how you felt about it in the comments below. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Why Wonder Woman is so important...

The modern world is a scary place. Throughout history there have been great struggles for people to get their voice heard, whether that be because of prejudices against their gender, race or sexuality. Our ancestors fought for our rights throughout history to enable us all to be considered equal. Sadly, recent events in the world have highlighted that for every few steps forward we take, there can sometimes be a step back. In this blog post I'm going to talk about the importance of having female role models in films and comics in a time where women are sadly still having to fight for equality.

As a female in her twenties I have been privileged enough to be brought up in a generation where sexism is a thing of the past... mostly. I've never really called myself a feminist, as in the modern day we live in I hadn't felt a need. I hadn't come across many sexist remarks or actions. That was of course until recent events. The world appears to have taken a step back into the dark ages where it is seemingly okay for a man of great power to harass and insult women, making them feel inferior.

I was inspired by seeing women all over the world take to the streets to protest these dark times. I wouldn't want any young girls growing up to think it's okay for women to be treated any differently because of their gender.

This year powerful and inspiring female characters are due to be showcased on the silver screen. Wonder Woman will soon be empowering females everywhere in her own film and I for one can't wait. It is so important for young girls to have role models (even fictional ones) to show them that women can be strong, intelligent and powerful. It's vital to ensure that the next generation will improve fairness and equality and showing these attributes in films is a great way to get the message across.

Along with Wonder Woman, we will soon be seeing fictional female icons such as Captain Marvel and Lara Croft in cinemas across the globe. I cannot stress enough how excited I feel about this. The media is extremely influential and has a massive impact on public opinion. Blockbuster films showing strong women in the fictional world, can help women feel confident in themselves in the real world.

These fictional characters show women as being strong, powerful, inspiring and independent - all characteristics that are true to real life! I feel extremely lucky to be living in an age where women are professional CEO's, inventors, innovators, doctors, lawyers, politicians and generally just kick-ass ladies! I may see fictional heroines as inspirational idols, but I also see them as a reflection on modern society and the amazing women that are a part of it.

I feel extremely privileged to be living in a forward thinking generation that generally advocates equality. However, there are still some small minded individuals who are prejudicial towards people different to themselves. Those people need to pay attention to the world around them and appreciate their mothers, sisters and daughters, because lets face it… all of us ladies have a bit of girl power inside us.

We are all Wonder Women, we just need the confidence and support to show that off!

It's okay to be childish sometimes

With The Lego Batman Movie hitting the big screen I think this is the perfect time to remind ourselves that it's okay to be a little childish sometimes.

Everyone loves Lego
There's nothing wrong with embracing your inner kid and enjoying something not intended for grownups. We all need to experience a bit of nostalgia once in a while and take some time to escape the stresses of adult life.

As someone who is a fan of geeky films, TV shows, games and more, I often get bombarded with the questions: "isn't that a bit childish?" or "isn't that for kids?" This is something that really frustrates me because it is a sign that people take themselves too seriously in life. If you think there's something wrong with having bit of fun and enjoying something youthful and silly, then I think there's something wrong with you. Adult life is full of serious decisions and tedious responsibilities, something even the most organised people get overwhelmed with at times. We all deserve to treat ourselves to a little escapism and I think watching kids movies can be a great way of doing so.

I saw The Lego Batman Movie at the weekend with my boyfriend and we had a great time. I honestly would really recommend this film if you need some time off to have fun, as it was a really entertaining film to watch. I loved the original Lego movie and this was a fantastic sequel that encompassed a huge cast of everyone’s favourite heroes and villains – there was even a Lego Dalek!

When we were at the cinema it didn't matter that most of the audience was made up of families with young children, we didn't care what anyone thought because we were happy enjoying the film. I think it's always vital to relax, take time out to have fun and most importantly to not worry about what other people may think. Life is full of difficulties, so why not spend your free time enjoying being a little bit childish? You know you want to!

Do you agree with me? I would love to hear your thoughts, so let me know what you think in the comments.

Geeky Garments - Black Milk Clothing

I always love geek themed fashion (hence the name of this blog)! Combining nerdy culture with something super stylish is a sure way to look fabulous. So, when I found out about the enormous range of geeky garments Black Milk Clothing had to offer I knew I would have to check them out.

I spotted a few of Black Milk's fabulous fashion items on my Instagram feed and instantly fell in love. When I visited their online store I found some amazing items to fit a wide range of fandoms, from Harry Potter and Doctor Who to DC and Marvel.

The clothes they sell are quite expensive, but I loved the range of designs and had heard so many positive comments about the quality of their products, so of course I was tempted into trying it out.

I settled on this awesome Killing Joke bomber. I love the Batman comic strip on the front of the jacket but the highlight is the amazing Joker design on the back. I absolutely adore this jacket. It may be over the top and outlandish, but it provides a fabulously fashionable opportunity to express your inner geek.

I also bought these gorgeous tights to go with the jacket. I adore these tights as they look like cute but grungy thigh high socks. They can add an extra bit of edgy style to any outfit and definitely make a winning combination with the Killing Joke bomber jacket.

As I said before the prices for Black Milk's products are high and if you live in the UK like me you have to dish out a bit extra for shipping. But despite the price tag, I am thrilled with my purchases from Black Milk Clothing and think it is a perfect brand for anyone looking for some super stylish geeky garments

Let me know in the comments what you think about this brand. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Goodbye 2016

Oh my goodness it's 2017 already! I can't believe it. It is definitely time for an update. The past year has flown by, but despite this I feel that a lot has happened and it's important to reflect on it.

Hello 2017
For many people 2016 was a bad year, there were numerous shock outcomes in politics around the world and we lost so many beloved stars. The geek community took a particularly big hit losing legendary actors such as: Alan Rickman, Kenny Baker, Carrie Fisher and many more. Each time we heard another name of a celebrity who had passed away the world grieved together, as we all remembered the magical stories these talented performers brought to life.

Despite all of the grief 2016 brought, for me personally it was a pretty good year. This time last year I was in the midst of exams while also trying to write my dissertation and organise numerous other university projects. Now, I have graduated university with a first class honours degree and I even themed my dissertation around the geek community that I love!

Since graduating I have landed myself two exciting jobs that I am now hectically jumping between (in a good way). Through doing these jobs I have had numerous wonderful experiences and have met so many amazing people including: Star Wars and Harry Potter actor Warwick Davies and Nadiya Hussain from The Great British Bake Off.

In the geek world we have had some high points as well. I feel that being a geek is gradually becoming more 'cool' which I see as a great thing. In my eyes the more popular nerd culture is, the more geeky content we will get. For example, we have had some amazing science fiction and fantasy films this year. Personally, I especially loved Star Wars: Rouge One and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

On top of all this I am thrilled with how far my blog has come. This year I have improved the rate of content I produce as well as the design of my blog. Plus, my @GlamAndGeek Instagram account is steadily gaining more and more followers who are wonderful geeky people like me. I am so grateful for this online community and the fact that I have found so many amazing like-minded people through writing this blog. I feel so lucky to be part of such a friendly and positive online community - especially as its something that seems to be so rare nowadays. So, thank you to all of you.

I can't wait to see what 2017 has in store for me. Who knows where I'll be this time next year?! I hope you are all as excited as I am to see what this new year brings.

Let me know in the comments how you felt about 2016 and what goals you have for this year.

Happy New Year!
